Ultimate Guide to Disney's Oogie Boogie Bash
Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney's California Adventure

Picture this: your little ones dressed as their favorite characters, their faces lit up with excitement as they enter a world where Halloween magic comes alive. Oogie Boogie Bash, the spellbinding Halloween extravaganza at Disneyland, is an event that promises unforgettable moments for families with small children. Whether it's your first visit or you're seasoned Disney enthusiasts, this bewitching celebration will cast its spell on everyone in your clan... magically frightful fun for the whole family.

Last year, our family headed to Disneyland to experience this exclusive ticketed event. Our family loved going to this frightfully fun afterhours event, and I am thrilled that it will be returning to the parks once again. We wanted to share our tips and advice so that your Oogie Boogie Bash experience can be fun and magical.

Oogie Boogie Bash 2023

Just last week, Disney announced that Oogie Boogie Bash will be returning to California Adventure park this fall on select nights from September 5th to October 31st. The event itself will run from 6:00pm-11:00 pm, but ticketed guests can enter California Adventure starting at 3:00pm the day of the event.

Tickets sales will begin on June 27 for Magic Key Holders. General admission tickets will go on sale beginning June 29. Last year, all the dates for the event sold out, so plan on getting tickets early. Ticket prices vary depending on the night you go, those prices are currently available on the Disneyland website (here).

Magical Money saving Tip: Oogie Boogie Bash is a separate ticketed event, and ranges in price between $134-$189 dollars. Our family saved money by skipping a park ticket on Oogie Boogie Bash night, and spent the day at the hotel pool instead.

Guests can get into the event starting at 3:00pm, which gives you 3 hours before the event starts to take advantage of rides. Rides are also open during the event with significantly lower wait times.

What is Oogie Boogie Bash?

Oogie Boogie Bash is a special after hours ticketed event that is a part of Halloween celebrations at Disneyland and California Adventure. During the event, guests experience special trail treats, the Frightfully Fun Parade, Villains Grove, exclusive meet and greets, unique photo pass opportunities, and special ride overlays. Guests (including adults) can dress up, within certain costume guidelines. The event in true Disney style is magical!

We took our kids to Oogie Boogie Bash when they were 4 and 7. We were a little worried that the experience might be a little frightening for our 4 year, but Disney does an amazing job of balance some scary with festively fun for all.

Treat Trails

One of main reasons people attend Oogie Boogie Bash is for the immersive treat trails. The treat trails are AMAZING and plentiful- they offer excellent candy and a healthy option like pre-packed apple slices or grapes, pretzels, or Pirates Booty.

When we went, there were 9 treat trails. Each treat trail had multiple candy handout stations and several of the treat trails had character meet and greets. The lines through the treat trails move quickly and guests can go through the treat trails as many times as they would like.

How much candy can you get from the trick or treat style event? A LOT! Each of our kids ended up with a full sized tote filled with treats and snacks after going through each treat trail 1 time!

Magical Tip: Guests are provided with a small reusable bag for the treat trails when they arrive, but bring an extra bag or tote to transfer candy and treats to. The bag they give you is SMALL and will be full after 1 or 2 treat trails.

Character Meet and Greets

Oogie Boogie Bash is a celebration of Villains, and the villains come out in full force for the event. There are several villains along the various treat trails that you can see and meet. There are also a few exclusive character meet and greets that are not a part of the treat trails, but are rare characters and exclusive to Oogie Boogie Bash.

Mother Gothel New in 2023

When we went we saw several different villains, including :

  • Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)

  • Mother Gothel (Tangled)

  • Dr. Facilier (Prince and the Frog)

  • Sid (Toy Story)

  • Madam Mim (Sorcerer and the Stone)

  • Oogie Boogie (Nightmare Before Christmas)

  • Agatha (Wanda Vision)

  • Cruella (101 Dalmatians)

  • Bruno (Encanto)

  • Ernesto De La Cruz (Coco)

  • Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle as the Sanderson Sisters

The villains are all in character and do an AMAZING job interacting with guests. Unlike most character meet and greets, you cannot actually go up the character and meet them individually, you walk past them as you travel through the treat trails. However, they do interact with guests as you walk by and do such an amazing job of being in character, the experience is still magical.

Magical Tip: Not all characters are a part of treat trails. When we went, the Sanderson Sisters, Ernestro De La Cruz, and Bruno were not a part of any treat trail. Because they were new the lines were extremely long and could easily take a good chunk of time from the overall event.

Villains Grove

Villains Grove is a specialized overlay placed with the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. The trail is transformed via lighting, sounds, projections, props, event smells to create villainous scenes. The space is fully immersive and absolutely magical. We HIGHLY recommend Villains Grove.

Villains Grove

The tricky part to visiting Villains Grove is that it doesn't open until the sunsets, which means that it isn't open for the entire Oogie Boogie Event. The other tricky part is that the line can get long and the wait can be anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour+.

We choose to save Villains Grove for the very end of our night, and ended up waiting in line for about 40 minutes. The line moved quickly given where we started (all the way down by Soarin') but it was still the longest wait for the night.

Magical Tips: The wait for Villains Grove is substantially shorter during the first Frightfully Fun Parade and during the last 30 minutes of the event. Strollers are not allowed in the groove, so plan on parking your stroller.

Frightfully Fun Parade

Of course, any specialized event at Disney has to have a parade! The Frightfully Fun Parade is exclusive to Oogie Boogie Bash and does not run anytime outside of the specialized event. The parade runs twice a night, an earlier time and a later time. It follows the typical parade route that other parades follow at California Adventure.

The parade has a balance of villain characters and of course some favorites- like Mickey. There are also so many characters exclusive to the parade- Ursula, Cheshire Cat, and more!!!

Frightfully Fun Parade

Several of the restaurant along the parade route offer specialized dining packages with priority parade viewing. We did not take advantage of these and just found a spot along the route about 20 minutes before the first parade started.

There were a couple of parts during the parade that were scary for our youngest. In true Disney magic, one of the parade performers noticed our daughter's scared reaction and changed his dance sequence so he didn't end up in her space, scaring her more. The characters and cast members are so good about balancing the fright and the fun for younger guests.

Magical Tip: If you can swing it, attend the later parade, there will be less people and it will be easier to find a front row spot. We didn't think our kids could make it that late and used a significant amount of time waiting in our spot for the parade to start.

Guardians of the Galaxy Ride Overlay

During the event, Guardians of the Galaxy gets a specialized layover changing the right to Guardians of the Galaxy Monsters After Dark. This overlay only runs during Oogie Boogie Bash and creates an entirely different ride storyline. We wont spoil it, but it is totally worth making time to ride Monsters After Dark.

We rode the ride later in the night after our youngest had fallen asleep. Our oldest wanted to ride it again and again. During Oogie Boogie the ride times are significantly lower for all the rides, including this one because there are so many other things to do in the park. It took about 30 minutes for us to ride Monsters After Dark with our oldest twice, and we didn't take advantage of any line cutting options (like rider swap).

Magical Tip: The ride does include monsters and is a bit more scary than I expected. I do not think our youngest would have liked it.

Mickey's Trick or Treat

Another event only exclusive is the Mickey's Trick or Treat family show. The show runs several times throughout the night, and is about 15 minutes long. It is a family friendly, interactive show with exclusive Halloween songs and Mickey and his friends. If you have ever attended a Disney Junior Dance Party, it is a similar Halloween themed entertainment option for families and younger kids.

The show runs several times throughout the night. Of course, later shows and shows that run during the parade tend to be less busy. The show is entertaining for guests of all ages, but is definitely geared towards younger children.

Magical Tip: If your little one can make a later show, the show isn't as busy and you can get a better seat.

Magical Moments, Lasting Memories: Our Final Thoughts (and tips)

Oogie Boogie Bash runs on select nights at Disney's California Adventure. It is a separate ticketed event, and can be a pretty expensive splurge (expect between $536-$756 for a family of 4). So the question remains, is it worth it?

Bonus Magical Money Saving Tip: To save money, purchase tickets earlier in the Halloween season (we went in early September).

In our opinion...YES! Oogie Boogie Bash provides so many exclusive experiences, brings a unique trick or treating experience, rare character meet and greets, and due to the limited ticketing- a less crowded park experience. Our entire family had a wonderful experience and we felt like there was something for everyone.

Our biggest take away from going to Oogie Boogie Bash was to have a plan and prioritize what you want to do. We were surprised by just how much there is and how much we could and could not get through. We quickly learned that we needed to decide what was most important for our family. Did we want to do all the trick or treating? Ride rides? Experience the shows and exclusive events?

We unexpectedly stayed until about 30 minutes before closing and still couldn't squeeze it all in.

Our Oogie Boogie Top 3 Include;

  • Villains Grove

  • Character Meet and Greets

  • Trick or Treat Trails

We hope that your experience at Oogie Boogie is magical and unforgettable.

Happy Adventuring
